Youth evangelist Matt Pitt, founder of The Basement, pleaded guilty Wednesday to attempting to impersonate a peace officer. Shelby County Judge Dan Reeves sentenced Pitt to one year in jail, but the sentence was suspended. Pitt will serve two years of unsupervised probation.
Pitt, 28, was arrested May 12 after police said Pitt pulled over vehicles in an unmarked Tahoe on Interstate 65. Police said Pitt told officers he was a deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. He was charged with a felony and taken to Shelby County Jail on $10,000 bond. The youth minister apologized in court for his actions and said he has a new passion that will only further his ministry. Judge Reeves warned him to not "fall pray to the same arrogance that got him in trouble."
More than two weeks after his arrest, Pitt returned to his ministry to tell his followers "We're not perfect, we're only forgiven."
