Oxford police say that an unidentified man passed away this morning after they arrested him for causing a disturbance at a car lot. Police responded to a call from Presley Auto Sales, located on Highway 78 around 9 a.m. Tuesday. Employees told police that there was a man at the lot acting strangely and breaking windows out of several cars. When they arrived, the man was inside a car and he refused to exit the vehicle on orders from the officers. Officers tried to remove the man's hands from where he gripped the steering wheel of the vehicle but were unable to do so. At that point, one of the officers began pulling out his stun gun and when the man noticed that motion, officers say he exited the car through the passenger side. After exiting the car, police say the man charged one of officers. That officer used his stun gun to stop the man and while he was being cuffed, officers noticed that he seemed to be in medical distress. Authorities transported the man to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police chief Bill Partridge believes the man may be from Jasper County, Georgia and may have been suffering from excited delirium syndrome, a condition that combines anxiety, delirium and agitation.
