Three men accused of committing arson in Ensley, including two Birmingham Police officers, have been indicted by a grand jury. Officer Jason Arnold was indicted on second degree arson. Officer Curtis Thornton was indicted on several charges: criminal mischief, attempted arson and two counts of second degree arson. Those charges are stemming from a case in Warrior. He also faces one charge of second degree arson in connection with the Ensley fires. Suspect Anthony Weaver has been indicted on second degree arson and third degree burglary. With the exception of the charges Thornton faces in Warrior, all three men have been connected with a string of arsons that were set back in west Birmingham back in May. Even though fire officials say there were a total of 14 abandoned or vacant homes that were set on fire, so far, the men have only been charged with one fire apiece. Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls said if the investigation reveals any connections to other fires, the suspects may face more charges, but for now, this is it. Falls also said the state will offer the men a plea deal, as is customary in all cases. He did not comment on what those plea deals would be. All three suspects are currently out of jail on bond.
