According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, reported cases of whooping cough are up from this time last year. It comes as the nation is experiencing a record outbreak of the disease. The state has revealed there are 135 reported cases of whooping cough compared to 110 cases at the same point last year. The state is far from a record pace. In 2008, the state reported more than 400 cases. That year, there were more than 250 cases by mid-September. The illness is highly contagious and passed by coughing and sneezing. Doctors suggest you get vaccinated for they call an easily preventable illness. Symptoms: •Runny nose •Nasal congestion •Sneezing •Red, watery eyes •A mild fever •Dry cough with a gasping "whooping sound"
