Hold on to your wallet. It appears someone is trying to take advantage of people in Jefferson County and they're posing as police.
Jessie Dickerson said, "When you start asking for money up front, I get suspicious right away." Dickerson says someone called her Forestdale home several times, posing as a Birmingham police officer claiming she won $2.5 million in a contest. Dickerson says, "$2.5 million is a lot of money. Think you'd get excited about but I didn't. I said something is wrong with this picture."
The person said he was "Detective John" and even gave her a badge number.
He said he would have a certified check delivered to her all she needed to do is pay 5,000 dollars to cover the taxes. Dickerson said he tried everything to get her to pay the money.
Dickerson said, "I said well I told you I didn't have $5,000. He said you have anyone who can borrow from." Although Dickerson knew it was a scam, she starting asking questions and the caller got angry.
Dickerson said, "He lost it. No doubt in my mind it was scam. He started using foul language. I hung up."
Chief Deputy Randy Christian said, "Don't ever commit to paying anything like that."
Christian is with the Jefferson County Sheriff's office. He says this is something that's gotten his attention because the scam artist is posing as law enforcement and knows why their doing so. Christian says, "It's a confidence game. They think if they use law enforcement it gets confidence of the victim. It's sad people fall prey to that."
Deputies are working to track down the scam artist. Before someone does become a victim.
Here's another piece of advice. Unless you signed up for a raffle or sweepstakes, no one should call you about money you've won.
