Auburn beats Louisiana-Monroe in overtime, 31-28

The Auburn Tigers pulled ahead of the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks in overtime to get their first win of the season on Saturday.

The Warhawks didn't waste any time against Auburn and scored on their first possession. A 12-play drive saw Louisiana-Monroe move gradually down the field with the exception of a 29-yard rush by Jyruss Edwards and one 15-yard pass interference call against Auburn. The Warhawks crossed the goal line with a Kolton Browning pass to Harley Scioneaux for one yard. The Justin Manton extra point was good.

Auburn answered the score shortly thereafter with a 5-play drive. Shortly after a Kiehl Frazier pass to Tre Mason for 34 yards, Tiger Onterio McCalebb rushed 27-yards for a touchdown at the 6:06 mark in the 1st quarter. Cody Parkey's extra point tied the game at 7.

The second quarter consisted mostly of back-and-forth punting. Louisiana-Monroe broke the pattern by grabbing their second touchdown of the game. After facing a 3rd and 9, Warhawk QB Kolton Browning connected a pass to Tavarese Maye for 32-yards to the Auburn 47. A few plays later, Browning broke free for a 39-yard rush for the TD. The Justin Manton extra point set the score at 14-7 with 3:52 remaining in the half.

Auburn would not go into the locker room with the Warhawks ahead. In 4-plays, Auburn was able to cover 75-yards. Kiehl Frazier connected with Phillip Lutzenkirchen for a 16-yard pass. On that same play, Louisiana-Monroe was penalized 15-yards for unnecessary roughness, putting the Auburn Tigers at the ULM 33. Auburn followed up with a 33-yard pass from Quan Bray to Kiehl Frazier for the touchdown. Cody Parkey tied up the score at 14 with the extra point.

The Tigers must have decided that they did not want a tie game at halftime and delivered one more touchdown before going to the locker room. After forcing a short Warhawk punt, Auburn received possession with 22 seconds left before halftime. On the third play with only seconds remaining, QB Kiehl Frazier managed to break 2 Warhawk tackles and throw long into the endzone to Sammie Coates for a touchdown with no time left on the clock. Cody Parkey's extra point saw Auburn go into halftime with a score of 21-14.

Auburn's fight did not dwindle during halftime. After receiving the ball, the Tigers pressed steadily down the field with an 11-play drive to cover 65 yards. The big play of the drive being Onterio McCalebb rushing for 29-yards. The Tigers grabbed the touchdown with Tre Mason hammering into the endzone with a 1-yard rush. Cody Parkey's extra point set Auburn's score at 28.

The Warhawks made an admirable attempt to get back to the endzone, but their 15-play drive was stopped by the Tiger defense. Louisiana-Monroe brought on the field goal team, but the Justin Manton field goal was blocked. Auburn took their new possession of the ball and drove towards the endzone. Helping the effort was an Onterio McCalebb rush for 43 yards to the Warkhawk 33. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Auburn's Mike Blakely would fumble 5 yards out from the goal line. The fumble was recovered by Warhawk Mitch Lane.

Most of the third quarter and half of the fourth quarter went without much scoring development. The Warhawks broke the scoreless period by grabbing a touchdown with 6:15 remaining in the game. The 9-play drive ended with Louisiana-Monroe QB Kolton Browning passing to Harley Scioneaux for 4 yards and the touchdown. Justin Manton's extra point brought the score to 28-21. The Warhawks were able to force Auburn to punt on their next possession and make the effort to tie up the game. The effort paid off with another 9-play drive to cover 65 yard. Kolton Browning finished up the drive with a 6-yard pass to Colby Harper with only 1:18 remaining in the game. Justin Manton booted in the extra point. Auburn's following attempt to get into field goal range fell short and the game headed to overtime.

The Warhawks took possession of the ball first in overtime and were forced to go for a field goal. The Justin Manton 37-yard kick came up short. Auburn then took control of the ball and Cody Parkey leisurely kicked a 35-yard field goal to win the game 31-28.

Next week, Auburn faces #3 ranked LSU at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
