Anniston Police are using all available manpower to search for a missing five year old boy, and the van in which he was believed to be abducted.
Police issued an Amber Alert Sunday night for Michiri Daquae Dabney, who was last seen around 5 p.m. on the 2000 block of Duncan Avenue in Anniston. The area is also known as Park Wynn Homes.
Police say they're looking for a black male driving a medium-sized white van, which they describe as having multiple black stripes on the rocker panels. At least one witness stated that the van looked like a later, 2007-2010 model year. So far no one has been able to narrow down a make or model.
Police say Dabney and another child were playing on the block when the man got out of the van.
"The two children ran from the scene, the five year old fell down. The black male grabbed the child, put the child in the van and left the scene," says Lt. Wayne Willis.
A neighbor, Fred Cunningham, said he spotted the van apparently minutes, possibly even seconds, after the abduction.
"There's a van parked about three to four feet from the stop sign there, which is normally unusual," Cunningham recalled, "and I directed my daughter to look at his tag. We were just kidding and joking, didn't pay it any real good attention but just kind of watched them."
Cunningham says, and police agree, the Park Wynn Homes area is a normally quiet neighborhood.
"This is a quiet neighborhood, you don't ever have issues like this, this is something new. I'm not, it's just something I'm not used to. You never get used to a child being abducted, it's something you can't get used to," he says.
Anniston Police called in all available personnel Sunday night to search for the child and the van, treating it, as Willis put it, as "a full scale event."
"Everyone that's available to come in is here whether they're scheduled to work or not," Willis says. "Our SRT team has been mobilized, and everyone we have is on the street right now, following up on leads, and checking areas in the city."
Willis says many officers are combing the areas on foot, and others are patrolling in cars, both around the scene and at various parks and hotels.
Willis says the police have tried to run down every lead they can find, and encourage anyone with information they think may be helpful, to call the police at 256-238-1800.
