Today was unofficial "Chick-fil-A Day" and customers showed up in droves to eat their favorite chicken meals and show their support for the restaurant.
The appreciation day was organized by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee on Facebook. The event is in response to criticism of the restaurant's president, Dan Cathy, for his comments in a Baptist Press article that his family and Chick-fil-a supports "the biblical definition of the family unit." Nearly 640,000 Facebook users RSVP'd to the event. In response, Chick-fil-A opponents have planned a Kiss Mor Chiks event for Friday, August 3. They encourage people of the same sex to go to their local Chick-fil-A restaurant and kiss each other. Chick-fil-A locations nationwide were packed with drive thru and walk up customers alike. The management at many locations said that they doubled their drive thru staff today and even had some employees outside directing traffic. Oxford and Pell City locations were among those that have been packed all day. Many of the supporters said they came out not just because they supported the restaurant's Christian values, but also because of free speech.
