A blaze at Club Paradise Tanning Salon in Jacksonville Saturday night resulted in the destruction of the building in which the business was located at 402 Pelham Rd. N.
Keith Comer, son of business owner Myra Davenport, said the fire started in one of the tanning beds. No one was in the building when it broke out, Comer said.
The fire alarm was called in from the nearby Subway sandwich shop at 9:15, said Jacksonville fire Chief Bill Buckner.
“We’re not sure how the fire started in the tanning bed,” he said.
Buckner said firefighters were on the scene within a couple of minutes but the salon building was already fully engulfed in flames. Assistance was provided by Anniston Fire Department and Piedmont EMS, he said. Jacksonville police also assisted at the scene.
The intensity of the blaze caused enough structural damage that a backhoe had to be brought in to tear down the salon building.
It was “structurally not sound,” Buckner said.
