Phil Neel, the man who created Aubie, has died according to the Auburn University Athletic Department. Neel designed the lovable tiger Auburn University's mascot is based on. Aubie first graced the plains on October 3, 1959, when the tiger appeared on the football program cover for Auburn's home game against Hardin-Simmons University.
The actual mascot made its first appearance at the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament in Auburn's upset win over Vanderbilt in 1979. Neel was 84.
