Former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy still may face some legal issues despite enjoying his second day as a free man.
Scrushy ended his five year bribery sentence Wednesday. Scrushy put out this statement on Twitter: "It's a great day, I look forward to rebuilding my life w/ my family."
"I'm glad he is home with his family. Prison is not where anyone wants to be. Richard Scrushy caused a lot of problems but five years in prison is a long time," John Haley, Birmingham attorney, said. Haley represents HealthSouth shareholders who sued Scrushy over fraud allegations. A court rendered a $3 billion judgment against Scrushy. Haley says they do not expect to collect all of the money but he plans to be in touch with the former business executive.
"We will continue follow up with him and asking him periodically what he is doing. What income he has. We will be watching," Haley said. At this time, those suing Scrushy are asking a judge to let them go after the money that's being kept in a trust fund which has funded organizations such as Briarwood Christian School.
"We are not looking at the charities that have received funds but there is still the Richard M. Scrushy Charitable Trust. Approximately four and a half million dollars," Haley said.
