A former Anniston police officer charged in his wife's murder and another attempted murder is behind bars this morning in Calhoun County. After a manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies, Fred Boyd was captured just after 11 a.m. Monday, July 23 in Meridian, MS. Calhoun County Sheriff's Department's Chief Deputy Matthew Wade says Boyd arrived at the Calhoun County Jaily between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. last night after being extradited from Mississippi. Boyd faces charges of murder and attempted murder for two shootings that took place Monday morning. He is being held on no bond for the attempted murder charge, Wade said. It is not immediately clear if bond has been set for the murder charge. The date for Boyd's preliminary hearing has not yet been set. Police say the first shooting happened at Boyd's home on Chatwood Drive in Saks around 7 a.m. Monday. Anniston police said Boyd's wife Carmella was killed in that shooting. The second shooting happened about 15-20 minutes later at a home in Hobson City where Boyd's uncle lives. Wade said gunfire was exchanged at that location before Boyd fled the scene. Authorities say Boyd's uncle was not hurt during the shooting in Hobson City. He told police that Boyd was dressed in the security guard uniform he wore for his new job, and took off in a Chevy Yukon. Anniston Police, on its Facebook page, said Boyd resigned as an officer of its department in August 2011. . The police department was placed on high alert Monday morning during the search for Boyd, with armed officers guarding the front doors of the building. Boyd's career ended abruptly last year. "He resigned when he left, was not on the greatest of terms, and he did resign," Wade said. Boyd's wife Carmella worked at the Oxford Walmart as a department manager for more than 20 years. Her co-workers say she will be greatly missed.
