An Ashland city councilman was killed Sunday night in a lawn mower accident at his home, Ashland Mayor Larry Fetner confirmed Monday. Mike Beale died around 6 p.m. Sunday, July 22, when a riding lawnmower turned over him on his property on Tyson Road, Fetner said. He was 60 years old. Beale had served for eight years as a councilman and planned to run in the mayor's race in the upcoming August 28 elections. Mayor Fetner said he and Beale had been neighbors since 1988 and were friends. "Even though we were in competition we were still friends. In fact, he and I had even talked, whichever one got elected, we would help the other one," Fetner said. Beale was the current chairman of the water board and also served on the library board. The following message was added to the City of Ashland's website on July 23: "The Mayor, Council Members and employees of the City of Ashland would like to extend our sympathy to the family of Council Member Mike Beale. He will be missed not only for his leadership in our local government, but also as a good friend and neighbor." Larry J Fetner Mayor Beale will be cremated and a visitation will be held at the Clay County funeral home Monday at 6 p.m., funeral director Nancy Catchings said. A memorial service will be held for him Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home's chapel.
