The hot, dry conditions recently seen in Central Alabama are the perfect recipe for wildfires. A total of five brush fires broke across the state Sunday. Chilton, Colbert, Fayette, Franklin and Shelby Counties were all dealing with active wildfires at one point.
The fires in Chilton and Franklin County were put out around 8 p.m. Fires in Shelby, Colbert and Fayette Counties continue to burn. There is no word if these are anywhere near being contained. The Forestry Commission says this year is going to be particularly dangerous because it is so dry in parts of the state. The 2011 tornadoes left thousands of acres of downed and damaged trees in their wake, creating a big fire hazard, especially in North Alabama. They stress safety during this Fourth of July holiday
