Yes, four years have passed already.
Beginning this week, residents interested in running for mayoral offices, city and town council seats and spots on some local school boards can officially throw their hats into the ring.
Most cities and towns in Alabama will hold elections Aug. 28. Anyone who wants their names on the ballot that day must first qualify to run. Candidates can begin qualifying Tuesday, and must qualify no later than 5 p.m. on July 17.
All local city and town halls will be open until 5 p.m. on July 17 even if that is beyond their normal hours of business.
Anniston doesn’t charge a filing fee, City Clerk Alan Atkinson said. But many cities do. Candidates in Jacksonville, Ohatchee, Oxford, Piedmont and Weaver must pay filing fees of $25 to $50. Attempts Friday to reach Hobson City officials Friday for details on its elections were unsuccessful.
Candidates also are required by state law to fill out statements of economic interest with their qualifying forms. In addition, they must file with the probate judge Fair Campaign Practices Act forms, listing the members of their campaign committees, within five days of qualifying.
Anniston and Piedmont have an additional difficulty that other local cities are not facing — they have not received U.S. Justice Department approval of newly redrawn ward and district lines. Atkinson said he will be working under the assumption that the new ward lines will be approved so he can order ballots and other supplies for the election immediately after qualifying closes.
“That’s what we’ve always done in the past,” Atkinson said. “I have no reason to believe it wouldn’t be preapproved and I’m on a fairly strict timeline.”
