State fire officials are urging the public to be cautious while celebrating the 4th of July this year. Fireworks, campfires and cookouts pose potential hazards due to the extremely dry conditions in Alabama. "We want everyone to enjoy their celebration, but we also urge the use of extreme caution with all debris burning and outdoor fires, including campfires and fireworks," State Forester Linda Casey said. The thousands of acres of fallen trees knocked down by the 2011 tornadoes have added to the wildfire hazard in several parts of Alabama. "Conditions are such that any fire can quickly spread out of control, threatening lives and property," Casey said. The Alabama Forestry Commission offered these safety precaution tips: -Avoid shooting fireworks in or near dry grass, leaves, or other combustible materials.
-Thoroughly soak the area with water where fireworks are to be discharged, and have a garden hose or other source of water nearby. -Do not dump hot coals in, near, or around dry grass, leaves, or other flammable materials.
-Do not bury hot coals. -Allow briquettes to cool completely; or, soak with lots of water, stir them, and soak again, being sure they are cold to the touch.
-Never leave a grill unattended. If a fire begins, state fire officials recommend immediately calling 911 and waiting in a safe place instead of trying to put out the flames yourself.
