A sinkhole opened on Interstate 20 late Thursday evening, leading to westbound traffic having to be rerouted onto U.S. 78 between exits 188 at the Oxford Exchange and exit 191 closer to the Georgia state line.
Alabama State Trooper spokesman Charles Dysart said he did not know the size of the hole, but that the Alabama Department of Transportation was working to fill it with concrete.
“We’re letting them handle the hole, and we’re controlling the traffic,” Dysart said.
Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson said his deputies were called for assistance between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Thursday after reports of multiple accidents.
State troopers made the decision to close I-20, and deputies helped stop traffic and divert it, Amerson said.
No details about the accidents were immediately available.
