The American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons has reported that almost a quarter of a million medically treated trampoline injuries occur each year in the United States. These injuries range from minor to severe, even life threatening injuries.
Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 8,000 trampolines designed and manufactured for young children. According to the CPSC release, the trampoline's handlebar can break, causing a fall hazard. The trampolines were sold at independent specialty toy and retail stores from January through March of 2012.
The CPSC release states, 'The product is a small, toddler-sized trampoline with a yellow and blue colored handlebar over the top of the trampoline for toddlers to hold on to while jumping. The trampoline has a blue mat and orange pads with different colored circles printed onto the pads, yellow legs and blue feet. A white label is sewn into the underside of the orange pads which has "786X Little Jumpers Trampoline" printed above the bar code.'
Product failures like this can result in injuries and be extremely costly to manufacturers and distributors. When a part failure comes to light it is important that the root cause of the failure be quickly investigated and understood. One company that has extensive experience in this field is EMSL Analytical, Inc.
At EMSL, the company provides a wide range of material testing, characterization and forensic laboratory services. 'EMSL's Materials Science Division helps clients develop solutions to challenges in manufacturing, quality assurance, and research and development,' reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL. 'This type of product recall, which may have resulted from material or design failures, happens all too often. EMSL's research scientists can help product manufacturers, distributors, and retailers test products before they go to market or identify the root cause of problems if they have already occurred,' he continued.
EMSL's laboratory is supported by Ph.D. scientists and a broad array of instrumentation that can apply a full spectrum of standard and customized analyses including elemental and chemical, structural, particle, surface, contaminant, mechanical, failure, and bio-effectiveness to any project.
