Mon, 30 Jul 2012 12:26:56 EST Today, more people recognize the importance of healthy, comfortable, and productive indoor environments. This awareness and demand for good indoor air quality (IAQ) has increased in recent years as the working public has become more educated about IAQ issues.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 'Most Americans spend up to 90% of their time indoors and many spend most of their working hours in an office environment. Studies conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and others show that indoor environments sometimes can have levels of pollutants that are actually higher than levels found outside.'
Unfortunately, many office buildings have significant indoor air pollution sources. These sources include furnishings, occupant activities, housekeeping practices, pesticide applications, vapor intrusion and microbial contamination. The complaints may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may be widespread throughout a building. When most of the people reporting complaints show signs of relief of their symptoms soon after leaving the building, the phenomenon has been labeled sick building syndrome.
'Because people generally have less control over the indoor environment in their offices than they do in their homes a large number of reported health problems today are associated with office buildings,' reported Brian Mcfarland, Vice President of Legends Environmental Insurance Services. 'People may complain of one or more symptoms which they may relate to poor IAQ in their office. These symptoms may or may not be related to poor indoor air quality. Poor lighting, noise, vibration, thermal discomfort, and psychological stress may also cause, or contribute to, these symptoms. It often takes an experienced indoor air quality professional to assess and conduct air sampling to determine if there is a problem. These IAQ professionals turn to Legends Environmental Insurance Services for insurance coverage to be able to offer these critical services.'
