Formaldehyde Hazards in Homes Identified with Convenient Test Kit

Mon, 16 Apr 2012 11:42:56 EST

Just last month, KXLY in Washington published and article about indoor air quality (IAQ) problems in homes and why people should get their homes tested.  According to the article, 'Poor indoor air quality can seriously impact health. Many chemicals, including formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are often found in homes and offices, can contaminate indoor air, leading to allergic reactions or chronic illness in certain individuals.'

Formaldehyde, which was specifically mentioned in the article, has recently garnered a lot of media attention.  Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical that is used in building materials, to produce many household products, and can be found in some consumer products.

In addition to the many building products and household furnishing that contain and off-gas formaldehyde, recent media attention has also brought to light that the chemical has been found in a number of consumer products such as hair straightening products and even nail polishes.  When these items are used by unsuspecting people they may release dangerous levels of formaldehyde into the air the building occupants breathe.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen.  In 2011, the National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens

'The presence of significant levels of formaldehyde in the indoor environment can lead to a number of potential health problems for building occupants,' reported Bruce Jacobs, CIH, President of IAQ Index, an indoor air quality and formaldehyde test kit manufacturer.  'Testing the indoor air quality is an easy and sure way for people to know if the air they are breathing could create real health concerns at home, in the office or at their children's school.'

To learn more about testing for formaldehyde or other IAQ contaminants, please visit IAQ Index at http://www.IAQIndex.com, email info@IAQIndex.com or call (888) 259-3883.

About IAQ Index
IAQ Index was developed by a Certified Industrial Hygienist with decades of experience dealing with indoor air quality issues.  IAQ Index was developed as a health-based, easy-to-understand, air quality index that is calculated from data generated for various parameters commonly measured during IAQ surveys.  The approach is similar to the EPA's Air Quality Index that has been used historically to communicate the risks posed by common pollutants in the ambient air.
