Employer Leave Management: - DMEC Whitepaper Looks at Best Practices in Leave Management

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 14:00:53 EST

Uniform leave policies and centralized leave management are two ways employers are adapting to increasingly complex leave laws, according to the results of the 2011 Employer Leave Management Survey, released today by the Disability Management Employer Coalition (DMEC) and Spring Consulting Group.

The environment for leave management has become increasingly complex as a myriad of regulations—particularly the FMLA, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA)—continue to evolve, and employees at organizations become more aware of their rights and responsibilities.

The white paper resulting from the 2011 Employer Leave Management Survey outlines 10 best practices that employers can use to overcome the challenges associated with leave management.

  1. Develop leave policies that can be provided uniformly across your organization.
  2. Centralize your approach to leave management.
  3. Consider outsourcing leave management.
  4. Develop communication protocols with other internal departments.
  5. Establish a relationship between HR/Benefits and Risk Management.
  6. Acknowledge the most difficult FMLA activities involve intermittent time, return to work, and ADA/ADAAA interaction, then identify resources and tools to help.
  7. Educate your team on evolving areas, such as ADA/ADAAA, Attendance Policies, and State or Municipal/County Leaves.
  8. Seek out technology and its application across all leave types.
  9. Set baseline metrics that can be tracked against over time.
  10. Continue to pursue integration across absence types, teams and processes.

Download the executive summary of the white paper at or request the full length paper from DMEC.
